In this lecture I explain the German Passive Voice. I explain the difference between active and passive. In two separate lectures you will learn everything about the process passive and the status passive.
Difference between Active and Passive
In active voice: the person that does something (the subject) is important.
Example:
- „Frau Meier kocht eine Suppe.“
Question: Who is cooking the soup?
(The acting person is important. It´s about who is doing something)
In passive voice: the action itself is important.
Example:
- „Die Suppe wird gekocht.“
Question: What is happening?
(The action is important. Who is cooking the soup doesn´t matter or is unknown.)
If the person who does the thing is named, use the preposition „von“ + the person in the dative case
- „Die Suppe wird von dem Koch gekocht.“
German grammar has two different types of passive voice, the process passive and the status passive. The two are different in meaning, construction, and usage. The following two lectures explain to you how and when to use the correct German passive voice.
