Temporal Adverbs
Temporal adverbs give information about the point in time, time period, order, repetition, frequency,… ⇒ anything that has to do with time.
They go with the following question words: when/how long/how often/until when/since when?
Examples: Temporal Adverbs
Question: wann? (when?)
A: „Wann warst du das letzte Mal bei Oma?“
B: „Gestern.“
A: „Und warst du heute schon bei deiner Tante?“
B: „Nein, da gehe ich morgen hin.“
Other examples: bald, damals, danach, dann, demnächst, gerade, gestern, heute, heutzutage, inzwischen, jetzt, montags, morgens, nachts, nie, niemals, schließlich, seitdem, sofort, später, vorerst, vorgestern, vorhin,..
Question: ab wann? (from when?)
A: „Ab wann kannst du mir helfen?“
B: „Ab morgen (kann ich dir helfen).“
A: „Ab wann wirst du Urlaub haben?“
B: „Ab übermorgen werde ich Urlaub haben.“
The question „ab wann?“ is always related to the point in time when an action starts (ab + temporal adverb).
Other examples: ab dann, ab jetzt, ab nun, ab morgen, ab übermorgen, ab sofort,..
Question: bis wann? (till when?)
A: „Bis wann kannst du mir helfen?“
B: „Bis morgen (kann ich dir helfen/habe ich Zeit).“
A: „Bis wann wirst du Urlaub haben?“
B: „Bis übermorgen werde ich Urlaub haben.“
The question „bis wann?“ is related to the point in time when an action ends (bis + Temporal adverb).
Other examples: bis dann, bis morgen, bis übermorgen, bis später, bis jetzt, bis nachher…
Question: seit wann? (since when?)
A: „Seit wann hast du nicht mehr geschlafen?“
B: „Seit gestern habe ich nicht mehr geschlafen.“
A: „Seit wann lernst du Deutsch?“
B: „Ich lerne seit gestern Deutsch.“
The question „seit wann?“ is related to actions that started in the past and haven‘t ended yet (seit + temporal adverb).
Other examples: seit gestern, seit vorgestern, schon immer, seit eben, seit gerade, seit damals,…
Question: wie lange? (for how long?)
A: „Wie lange hast du nicht mehr geschlafen?“
B: „Seit gestern habe ich nicht mehr geschlafen.“
A: „Wie lange sprichst du schon Englisch?“
B: „Schon immer! Meine Eltern sind aus Neuseeland.“
The question „wie lange?“ is asking for a time period. It can be answered with seit + adverb when the action hasn‘t been completed yet.
Other examples: seit eben, bis vorhin, schon immer, noch nie,…
Question: wie oft? (how often?)
A: „Wie oft gehst du ins Fitness-Studio?“
B: „Ich gehe selten ins Fitness-Studio.“
A: „Wie oft lernst du Deutsch?“
B: „Ich lerne mehrmals am Tag Deutsch.“
The question „wie oft?“ is asking for a frequency. The answer is an adverb that describes an amount or regularity.
Other examples: selten, oft, öfters, mehrmals, einmal, zweimal, dreimal, immer montags/freitags/morgens/abends…

Temporal adverbs describe a point in time, time period, order, repetition, or frequency:

Temporal adverbs are always related to time. Like all adverbs, they are never declined and are unchangeable. We can ask for them with: wann/wie lange/wie oft/bis wann/seit wann?
