What are adverbs?
- Adverbs describe circumstances.
- They are related to verbs ⇒ Adverb
- The describe the location, time, cause, or manner of an action.
- They can be divided into the following main categories: locative, temporal, causal, and modal.
- Some adverbs can also be used to connect sentences. We call these conjunctive adverbs.
- They can‘t be changed and are not declined.
The Difference between Adverb and Adjective
Adjectives describe nouns more precisely. They give further information thing or a person. If we put them before a noun they have to be declined.
Adverbs describe circumstances and are related to the verb, NOT to a noun. They are used to describe how, when, why or where something happens. They are unchangeable and can´t be declined.
German Temporal Adverbs
Temporal adverbs give information about the point in time, time period, order, repetition, frequency,… ⇒ anything that has to do with time.
Example: „Ich gehe morgen einkaufen.“
German Locative Adverbs
Local adverbs give information about a location. They are asked for with the questions Where? Where to? From where? We can answer these questions with the help of prepositions as well. Go to the lecture to understand the differences.
Example: „Wo ist dein Vater?“ - „Unten!“
German Locative Adverbs "Hin" & "Her"
The adverb „hin“ describes movement away from from the speaker. The adverb „her“ describes movement towards the speaker. Hin and her can not stand alone, but they are combined with verbs and other adverbs that answer the question “where?”. They are used to describe directions.
Example: „Komm bitte her! Ich muss mit dir reden!“
